Bishop Arthur E. Walmsley

The issue for the Episcopal Church in the city

is not survival but faith.

At the heart of every congregation must be a

converted and prayer-full pastoral community

-From the Rule of the Order of the Ascension

Please add to your prayers Arthur E. Walmsley. Arthur died on October 5 in Deering, New Hampshire. He was also on OA's Council of Advisors in 1984 when we were in communal formation.

He was Bob Gallagher's bishop when Bob was on staff in Connecticut. He had read Stay in the City, passed it out to Diocesan Council, and said that was along the lines of what he hoped to do. He gave Bob the space to pursue new methods of parish development, including spending time on OA's development and the establishment of the CDI at General Seminary. There was a CDI in Connecticut for many years. Most of our early Companions were lay people from Connecticut.

Arthur had a deep commitment to urban ministry and civil rights. When on the national staff he was involved in Freedom Summer.
